About Bill Protzmann

Bill Protzmann’s mission is to raise awareness of the power of music as self-care.

He is the world’s leading advocate and educator on the power of music for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, holds magna cum laude degrees in piano performance and creative writing, and has led a successful IT consulting practice for more than 30 years.

In 2011, Bill launched Music Care Inc, a for-purpose corporation to teach and advocate for practical ways music can be used for your self-care. He was recognized by the National Council for Behavioral Health with an Award of Excellence in 2014 – the industry equivalent of winning an Oscar.

Bill believes that the human spirit is alive, active, and accessible to everyone.

His latest book, More Than Human, explains how and why re-engaging the human spirit can make a practical and positive difference in our lives and can be scaled from individuals to families, teams, and entire organizations.

When he talks about music and self-care, he speaks with gentle conviction and from real experience.

Bill Protzmann Success Stories

Music Care Helps Homeless Folks

Bill Protzmann, “the music man” inspires hope here at Friend to Friend (F2F Homeless w/SMI). I have seen a change since Bill began volunteering at F2F. Bill and I are both advocates for recovery from mental illness and addiction. As a former working musician and performer myself, I consider Bill to not only be an accomplished musician, but an articulate, compassionate man committed to spreading the multifaceted universal language of music to heal. Bill was instrumental in facilitating one of our client’s dreams to heal through music by inspiring him to provide guitar lessons for homeless veterans (Guitars for Vets).more

Bill has been teaching the transformative power of rhythm and sound to our clients for the past three years. Our clients are often fearful of participating in classes but, Bill’s unique abilities exemplify this famous quote “Music has charms to soothe the savage breast to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak”. William Congreve, The Mourning Bride, Act 1 Scene 1 English dramatist (1670 – 1729).

Recently, a member of F2F said to me “You know Doug, I did not want to go to music class this morning because I was not feeling well, but I attended anyway, and I am so glad I did.” I asked another client what she thought of the music class and she said “I give it a 10! It was cool to learn about different kinds of music. I enjoyed learning how to calm myself down using music.” Another person said “When Bill brought out the drums for the class. I started playing one, and had so much fun. I smiled for the first time in a long time.”

Most striking are those who are reluctant initially to attend class, but as Bill works his music magic they are transformed. Today in class, Bill traced the blues way back to Field Hollers’, Chain Gangs, and Prison Farms. Speaking the universal language of music, Bill educated our folks on music history, while helping their moods transform from grim to cheerful.
Bill helps open our minds to the power of transformation and recovery through the transcendent medium of music.

We are so blessed to have Bill Protzmann, the music teacher and the “friend” of the Friend to Friend Program.
